I don't think you need to do that I would just go with the 4 ply or better yet a 3 ply taller beam. I often have gone to lvls with the steel flitch beam laminated in the center tied together with half inch bolts staggered on 12" o.c. You can run all the numbers, but with some projects it's just easier to over build it and cheaper too, it depends how many variables are in the equation. I'm needing to tell them how big of a notch to form up for the ends of the beams. My concrete guy who does this kind of work all the time says he's never seen more than a 3- ply beam. What I'm looking for is what you think of that 4 ply beam. I understand why because their license is on the line. they're either all in with full analysis or all out. The only advice I've been able to get is Menards has a computer program you put in the basic info above, and the height of lvl you want and it tells you how many ply beam is came up with a 4 ply 11 7/8" beam. (For what it's worth, the house mover tells me it weighs 42 ton ) One cross beam is 12' from end of house, the other is 14' from end. floor joists run long ways and beams short ways so beam span would be 14' to center. There are two cross beams that I'd like to replace with LVLs so I can go from 3 support posts to one post each. Right now it's up on cribbing, the old block basement is gone and footings are poured. I'm in the process of having a new basement poured under my 1 1/2 story house.
